Clothing

When you're choosing the few pieces of clothing that you'll wear for 4.5 months straight, you better darn well be sure they fit well, serve the purpose and that you like them, or you'll be figuring out alternatives on the fly. While there's a chance that some of the pieces of clothing that I've chosen may not work out well, I've done a bunch of research and tried out a bunch of options and finally came up with a solid plan of stuff I feel comfortable with. Some stuff I got because it was on sale and it served the purpose, some stuff I got because it is a popular choice amongst other PCT hikers and some stuff I got because it's top notch quality.

Here's a video I just did, going through my choices.

We're READY!

One month today we'll be on trail. Leaving Campo and taking our first steps North will feel OH SO GOOD after months and months and months of planning.

I feel confident we're ready. I used to do research and find stuff that i hadn't thought of and needed to look into. Now I do reading just to reinforce the fact that WE'RE READY!

Physically, we're ready
Planning wise, we're ready
Financially, we're ready
Emotionally, we're ready
Knowledge wise, we're ready
Experience wise, we are so NOT ready. But we'll gain experience pretty quick!!

I feel ready to just be on trail. I know I'm not alone. A year's worth of planning is as done as it's going to be and there's not much to do now but just wait til we leave. Oh, and get married, I guess. :)

Going Postal

Today, Julia and I drove 11 boxes across the border to Ogdensburg, New York, to mail them to Bakersfield (to Abby). We had two important reasons for doing this. Firstly, we wanted to make sure that we could answer any questions at customs, and we DID have to answer a few, and they looked through the boxes. Secondly, it was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than if I had mailed them from here. It's about an hour's drive, but we saved about $300 off shipping charges.

We parked outside the post office and affixed our pre-addressed shipping labels. We had to keep the boxes open to show them at the border, and then taped the heck out of them so they make it all the way to California!

Hilarious sign on the way home. Some may think that we should have just continued straight... given the decision to actually do this thing!

Homeless...

We're taking the appropriate steps towards being able to consider ourselves homeless. We're currently house sitting for my parents, and moving out of our apartment into this lovely 100 sq ft storage locker. When we say "home", it doesn't seem to apply to either dwelling right now. Can't wait to get that thing filled and be done with it for 5 months! Looking forward to moving into our Squall 2 and getting on with this hike! Six weeks tomorrow we leave for San Diego.

Weights!

Here's a fun little video we put together showing 3 days worth of weight training. We'll make another to show all the cardio we're doing as well.

Workout of the Day

Today's Workout:

Today Julia and I went over to Goodlife for around 10:30AM and did a chest workout. It was a solid workout and I had a blast pushing Julia to work her butt off. No cardio this morning, but I'll try to squeeze in an hour or so on the trainer tonight. Here's what it consisted of:

Flat Barbell Bench Press: 5 sets of 20, 14, 12, 10, 8
Incline Smith Machine Press: 5 sets of 20, 14, 12, 10, 8
Pec Deck: 5 sets to failure
Decline Press: 4 sets: 16, 14, 12, 10
Abs: Crunches with rope / cable machine: 4 sets to failure

Total time took us about an hour flat.

Workout of the Day

Today's Planned Workout (W.O.D.)

I'll preface this post by saying that yesterday's workout ended up being a little longer and probably a little more intense than I anticipated. I typically try to get my weights workout done in an hour, and to fit in what I posted meant that I had to really push the pace. I did it all, but had to switch around the order a bit. As far as the cardio, I hammered through 66 minutes on the stairmill at an average level of about 13.5. That's always a solid workout. Immediately after that I got on a treadmill and ran pretty solidly (~2.4km) for 10 minutes on the treadmill at a bit of an incline. I like the feeling as it somewhat emulates the feeling of running off the bike, or running on tired legs.

TODAY'S workout is going to be only cycling on the trainer. I've ALWAYS loved the trainer. Going to pop in a DVD we got from my brother in law, Alex and go for about 1:15 - 1:30. We'll see how much time I have this morning. Everywhere I've lived over the past 5 years I've had my trainer... Stittsville, a couple places in Ottawa, Huntsville and Wollongong. That thing has served me well!!!
